Acceptable Use Policy

There are three basic elements to our acceptable use policy with respect to shell accounts.

  • Don't do anything illegal.
  • Don't do anything unethical.
  • Respect the resource usage limits.

The above elements are the basics. Below are some specifics, but just because a specific issue isn't outlined below doesn't mean it's OK. If it violates any of the above principals it's still against our rules.

  • No spamming. That means no unsolicited mass e-mail, no excessive cross-posting in Usenet, no excessive posts to forums or sending mass unsolicited Instant Messages. Spamming in any form is prohibited.
  • Attempting to bypass (or succeeding) security mechanisms on our hosts, or using our hosts as a point of attack on other Internet sites.
  • Any sort of denial of service attacks such as packet floods or mail-bombs.

There are specific abuses that involve using an account for something other than which it was intended. For example, Student Accounts are intended for educational purposes only. Using them for commercial purposes is strictly forbidden. The exception to this is an online school that purchases accounts for their students. In that case it is ok as long as the commercial purpose is education.

Economy shell accounts may not run more than one IRC bot, bouncer, or small background task. Mail lists may not be hosted on an economy shell account.

Standard accounts have a limit of not more than 2 IRC bots or small background tasks must be respected. Up to two mail lists may be operated from a standard account.

Power user accounts have a limit of not more than 4 IRC bots, small background tasks, or lists. These limits must be respected.

Enterprise accounts are permitted up to ten small background processes or IRC bots; or one background task. A small task is defined as one that has no more than 15MB resident core usage (the actual core image may be larger as long as not more than 15MB remains resident in core on average). A large tasks may have up to 100MB resident.

A free two week trial is provided to determine the suitability of our services for your needs. No refunds are provided, even if your account is terminated for abuse.
